Dandhy, orang yang mungkin pernah menjadi salah satu buronan paling dicari di negeri ini. Dia dilaporkan ke Kepolisian Republik Indonesia atas dakwaan kasus penyebaran kebencian yang menyeret nama baik ketua partai, sebuah partai yang menjadi sponsor utama penguasa negara saat ini.
Kalau boleh jujur, tubuhnya sebenarnya sangat jauh dari stereotip berperawakan kriminal, bahkan ketambunannya itu begitu gemas untuk ditatap secara saksama dan dalam tempo yang sesingkatnya. Namun siapa sangka orang ini adalah orang yang turut meramaikan huru-hara politik atas tulisanya yang berjudul; “Su Kyi dan Megawati”.
Sebagai seorang mantan jurnalis di beberapa stasiun tv swasta, tentu banyak pengalaman syahdu dan serpihan pengalaman tentang proses pendokumentasian jurnalisme investigatif yang dipulungnya.
Abaikan itu, karena Dandhy telah sukses dengan sederet karyanya seperti; Di Balik Tembok Arsip Nasional (2008), Kiri Hijau Kanan Merah (2009), Baret Coklat (2010), Alkinemokiye (2012), The Mahuzes (2017), dan yang terakhir adalah Asimetris (2018) berbicara tentang permasalahan perkebunan sawit di Indonesia.
Dandhy kemudian mendirikan WatchdoC, yang merupakan rumah produksi audio visual berdiri sejak 2009. Sepanjang tujuh tahun ini telah memproduksi 165 episode dokumenter, 715 feature televisi, dan sedikitnya 45 karya video komersial non komersial. Serta memperoleh berbagai penghargaan.
Ekspedisi Indonesia Biru adalah salah satu maha karya yang kini bisa kita nikamati secara leluasa di jagad per-youtube-an. Dandhy bersama Suparta Arz memulainya di Januari pagi tahun 2015 dengan menggunakan motor bebek berkeliling Indonesia, melakukan pendokumentasian dan mempublikasikan sejumlah isu terutama aktivitas ekonomi masyarakat (livehold), keragaman hayati (biodiversity), kearifan budaya, isu energi dan lingkungan hidup (www.indonesiabiru.com).
Dalam kesempatan yang cukup berbahagia, Suluh Pergerakan SMI beruntung bisa mewawancarai dirinya, meskipun kala itu ditemani oleh kawannya (seorang videografer) yang sedikit kelihatan terburu-buru hendak beranjak ke acara selanjutnya; berkunjung ke Kendeng dalam acara memperingati satu tahunnya Yu Patmi (Petani Kendeng yang tak pernah lelah berjuang). Sudah sejak berapa hari nih mas Dandhy di Jogja?
Hmmm Hampir tiga hari, Kemarin mengikuti acara nobar film Asimetris di Fakultas Filsafat UGM.
Oh ya, bagaimana antusias para peserta mas?
Cukup baik dan ramai, beberapa bisa duduk tapi gak bisa nonton filmnya, mungkin hanya bisa mendengar audionya saja hehehe. Semangat juga ya anak-anak itu.

Oh boleh, waktu saya itu memang harus dibagi, untuk masalah waktu pun semampu saya jauh dari privatisasi, sudah agak sosialis belum nih mas?
Sipp…..ngomong-ngomong terlepas dari aktivisme mas Dandhy sebegai pendiri WatchDoC, latar belakang apa yang mempengaruhi mas Dandhy memilih film Dokumenter sebagai bagian dari gerakan sosial?
Saya melihat bahwa itu adalah format yang paling cocok mengakomodir kepentingan paltform yang sekarang audienya lebih sering ke audio visual dibanding teks, yang bisa disebut “mensiasati budaya baca yang rendah banget” bahkan tradisi kultural tulisan yang kita miliki tidak rata terdapat pada kebudayaan lainya. Kita lahir dari tradisi lisan lalu tak lama datanglah teknologi video ini, ada youtube, internet, dan segala macamnya. Saya melihat bahwa inilah cara mudah dan cepat menjangkau audien secara luas, sehingga formatnya adalah film dokumenter. Sebenarnya tv masih strategis, sebab tv adalah medium saat ini menjadi 70% penduduk Indonesia mendapatkan informasi terutama di daerah pedalaman, nah internet kan cuma fenomena urban, jadi kami mendesain film dokumenternya pun genrenya yang agak ke tivitivian, karena kami memang inginya audienya itu seperti audien tv. Meskipun kami hanya bisa menyediakannya melalui youtube ataupun layar tancap.
Mengapa memilih film dokumenter, kenapa gak milih misalkan film pendek, fiksi, sinetron atau lainya?
Mungkin karena background kami jurnalis maka kami bisa mengerjakan itu
Mengapa WD masih bertahan dengan film dokumenter? pastilah jika melihat perjuangan terutama Ekspedisi Indonesia Biru penuh susah payah, jatuh bangun, tahan banting, resiko tinggi, dan dekat dengan kantong tipis (jauh dari ekspektasi meraup pundi-pundi besar dari setiap produksi)
Mungkin kecanduan adrenalinenya kali ya, bahwa ternyata dalam beberapa kasus kami berhasil mengangkat sebuah fragmen advokasi, dan kami percaya bahwa ini efektif menimbulkan rasa percaya diri pada warga; jadi ketika mereka direkam, di filmkan kemudian didistribusikan skala nasional bahkan internasional menjadikan semangat mereka naik, itu yang paling berharga bagi saya. Jadi penonton itu faktor kedua, faktor pertama adalah apakah orang yang saya filmkan terbantu dengan film-film yang saya buat. Gak ada gunanya filmnya luas, ditonton orang banyak, tapi orang-orang yang saya filmkan merasa bahwa mereka tidak terasa terbantu samasekali dengan film yang saya buat. Setidaknya saya berusaha memberikan harapan pada setiap film-film itu, bahwa kami melihat energi-energi baru yang kian tumbuh atau bahkan menjadi inspirasi di tempat lain
Bagaimana penentuan tema dalam proses produksi?
Ada dua, yang pertama jika sebuah isu tidak cukup diliput media, padahal ada bagian penting, kemudian tidak cukup menyuarakan, tidak cukup mengadvokasi, maka kami akan memilih topik itu. Pilihan kedua, pernah diangkat oleh media bahkan menjadi headline tetapi prespektifnya tidak menguntungkan bagi warga masyarakat, prespektifnya meminggirkan kepentingan masyarakat, prespektifnya tidak mengakomodasi suara-suara rakyat, kalau itu terjadi maka akan kami ambil juga biarpun itu sudah ada seperti; penggusuran, atau reklamasi. Namun kami menawarkan prespektif berbeda, sehingga kami putuskan untuk mengangkat tema itu.
Bagaimana mas Dandhy melihat keseriusan pemerintah dalam menangani konflik dan permasalahan lingkungan yang ada? sebagaiman jika kita melihat WD begitu banyak mengangkat masalah lingkungan ke permukaan sebagai kritik terhadap pemerintah.
Ehhhh….kalo keseriusan itu begini ya, kalau masalah lingkungan itu kita pahami sebagai sebuah masalah, kemudian diberikan kepada pemerintah, terus pemerintah menganggap bahwa konflik itu menjadi sebagai sebuah keseriusan (kalau mereka menganggap itu masalah) maka mereka akan tangani. Tapi, yang saya lihat lebih buruk, pemerintah menganggap bahwa itu tidak masalah. Jadi kalau kita melihat Kendeng, misalkan itu sebagai sebuah masalah, tetapi bagi pemerintah itu bukan masalah. Pemerintah berpikir bahwa, pabrik semen memang harus berdiri, kapasitas produksi harus digenjot, ruang kapital harus dibentuk. Nah lingkungan adalah ekses, bisa dimitigasi, warga bisa dibantu dengan dana CSR, dikasih gula-gula ekonomi, akhirnya kita tidak bicara yang sama soal masalah, sehingga ya gak nyambung ketika ditanya; sejauh mana keseriusan pemerintah akan permasalahan lingkungan? Untuk level keseriusan pemerintah belum disitu pertarunganya. Ini horizon yang berbeda dalam melihat masalah, itu yang paling mengerikan. Identifikasi masalah kita dengan pemerintah tentang kerusakan lingkungan sangat berbeda, ya alasan dari pemerintah sangat klasik seperti; kita kan butuh pabrik semen, kita butuh menyerap tenaga kerja, dan lain sebagainya. Jadi ini lebih berat, kita tidak ngomong dalam bahasa yang sama.
Menurut mas Dandhy sendiri sudah sejauh apa karya film dokumenter Indonesia mampu mempengaruhi gejolak gerakan sosial?
Di level untuk menumbuhkan kepercayaan diri orang yang di filmkan itu saya rasa sudah cukup, sebagai artikulator menurut saya sudah ok, beberapa karya dokumenter jauh lebih berpengaruh dari pada karya jurnalisme.
Bagaimana menurut mas Dandhy jika melihat mayoritas pegiat film dokumenter dalam menentukan kiblat proses produksinya?
Ya, kalau boleh kata mereka masih memandang dokumenter sebatas bagian dari Art, atau hiburan, belum dengan sadar menjadikan dokumenter bagian dari konteks sosial. Akhirnya, orientasi mereka berkarya terdorong oleh desakan ekspektasi untuk bisa mendapatkan viewernya besar di youtube, supaya bisa masuk festival, dan bisa masuk bioskop. Sangat beda dengan film-film WatchDoC yang tidak terlalu pusing jika tidak bisa masuk festival, bisa masuk bioskop maupun banyak viewernya. WatchDoC sendiri sudah pada kategori aksiologi, sudah bukan ontologi. WD sudah memasuki level praksis, sudah bukan teori.
Tanggapan mas Dandhy dengan karya Joshua Openheimer tentang 65?
Sumbangan signifikan bagi sejarah kita, bagi gerakan sosial ini sebagai titik balik, justru film itu dilawan dengan keras oleh kelompok fasis agamis dan sering dikaitkan dengan kebangkitan komunis segala macam, tapi gara-gara respon kayak begitu malah sangat membuka mata internasional tentang kejadian kasus 65 di Indonesia, tanpa film Joshua gak ada orang kita yang bisa menjelasakan peristiwa 65 ke kancah internasional.
Ini mungkin pertanyaan yang agak remeh temeh mas Dandhy, sutradara yang paling anda kagumi siapa?
Michale Moore, mungkin karena kami ada kesamaan gagasan-gagasan secara tema. Bedanya kalau Michale Moore sendiri kan presenting tapi kalau saya tidak, kalau saya cukup subyek yang ada di film itu saja yang dapat mempresentasikan. Michale More itu kalau dilihat kayak Nabi, kayak Ulama perlu ada representasi. Tapi kami gak perlu, biar subyek saja yang berbicara mempresentasikan.
Tentang harapan, sejauh apa harapan mas Dandhy terhadap film dokumenter Indonesia dan para pegiat film dokumenter
Saya optimis ya, saya melihat bagaimana respon komunitas, kawan, dan dari produksi film dokumenter mereka bisa menciptakan suasana meskipun baru “gatheringnya” belum “movementnya” tapi pada taraf “gathering” itu sudah ok. Di zaman youtube kayak begini mereka masih mau ngumpul untuk nonton, kenapa ga milih nonton sendiri misalnya, ini kan menunjukan sudah ada kecenderungan kita menuju “togetherness”. Proses untuk mengumpulkan orang-orang itu kan butuh perjuangan.
Seperti tadi yang saya katakan, misalnya jika ada orang merasa “ngapain saya capek-capek nobar kalau filmnya ada di youtube meskipun itu bisa untuk ditunggu?” Berarti kan masih ada sesuatu yang kurang dari youtube, nah setelah “gathering” harapanya tentunya ada langkah menuju “movement” dan itu bukan tugas WatchDoC. Masa WD harus mengerjakan semuanya? Kita itu kan rumah produksi, bukan parpol, kita bukan NGO, kita bukan Pesantren. Jadi harus ada sesuatu yang bisa ditangkap oleh teman-teman. Sekarang ini ngumpulin orang sekampung itu gampang kok, bikin layar tancap di sebuah lapangan, umumim bahwa layar tancap akan digelar dan filmnya film WatchDoC, pasti ngumpul orang. Tapi yang paling penting, setelah itu untuk apa? Agenda apa yang mau kita buat? Itu kalau gak ditangkap bisa jadi antiklimaks. Artinya jangan sampai orang yang nonton sudah gak ada lagi gregetnya mau buat social movement.
Harapan mas Dandhy akan geliat film dokumenter Indonesia?
Teruslah berproduksi dengan banyak, walaupun kualitas tidak terlalu serius, gak usah kejar yang premium-premium amat, meski gak pernah masuk festival, maupun masih make teknologi dan alat yang lama. Jadi gak usah terlalu ngikuti alur berpikir barat, karena mereka tak banyak menjumpai konflik. Di Indonesia beda, kita dituntut bermain volume. Konflik sosial begitu banyak.
