Novel ini diawali dari hukuman pada Marcellus. Hanya karena menertawakan sebuah puisi konyol Marcellus dimutasi ke daerah Minoa. Kawasan yang letaknya di Yerussalem dan jauh dari kekuasaan Romawi. Tempat yang dikuasai oleh politisi buas, pengusaha licik, rohaniawan rakus. Sungguh lukisan tempat yang bobrok, rusak tapi berbahaya. Pada saat itulah Yesus berada disana: menggenggam harapan orang miskin dengan kritik keras pada ketidak-adilan. Terutama petinggi agama Yahudi yang jual belikan upacara keagamaan. Yesus datang untuk mengutuk kemunafikan ajaran.
Novel ini meletakkan Yesus di akhir kisah. Putusan Pontius Pilatus, Gurbenur Yerussalem, adalah menyalibnya. Tak pernah tahu apa kesalahan Yesus bahkan merasa ini soal yang bukan wewenangnya. Tapi orang-orang licik Yahudi merasa Pilatus bisa dipengaruhi. Tekanan lobby dilakukan terlebih Pilatus memang sudah tertawan sejak awal. Hubunganya dengan orang Yahudi bukan Gurbenur dengan rakyat tapi cukong dengan boneka. Mirip politik di negeri ini: Pilatus menyuruh Marcellus untuk melaksanakan hukuman. Panglima tampan ini tak menyangka titah itu berbuah petaka sekaligus pencerahan baginya.
Novel ini menuju pada kisah utamanya: Yesus disalib kemudian jubahnya diundi oleh panglima Romawi. Marcellus mendapatkanya. Bukan riang tapi rasa bersalah hingga ketiadaan ingatan. Marcellus seperti kena kilatan kesadaran yang membuat dirinya berubah. Dari seorang panglima menjadi pemburu kisah Yesus. Penasaran atas pemilik jubah Marcellus berusaha mencari kekuatan pribadi Yesus hingga pada sudut-sudut desa yang membawanya bertemu dengan para sahabat Yesus. Begitulah kisah ini seperti perjalanan Iman seorang panglima pembunuh yang mau tahu korbanya.
Novel ini mengajak pembaca untuk memahami Iman bukan dari keajaiban. Marcellus yang ditugaskan oleh Kaisar Romawi untuk menelusuri siapa sebenarnya Yesus musti melakukan perjalanan panjang. Menemui siapa saja yang pernah bersama Yesus, mengetahui apa yang dilakukanya dan bagaimana warga masyarakat memberi reaksi. Kesaksikan para sahabat itulah yang jadi kekuatan novel ini: dialog cerdas, debat yang unik serta komentar yang jenaka. Yesus memang ajarkan kepedulian tapi juga Yesus ingin orang kaya berbagi kelimpahan. Diantara derita rakyat kecil dirinya berusaha untuk selalu bersama dan berada di tengah-tengahnya.
Marcellus datang dusun dimana Yesus dakwah pertama kalinya. Ditemuinya seorang anak yang pernah disembuhkanya. Bukan karena keajaiban tapi kegembiraan dan sikap anak itu yang menawan. Ia bertemu seorang tua yang dipanggil oleh Yesus nama kecilnya. Pria tua itu gembira hingga menjadi pengikutnya. Usia dan badanya lemah tapi selalu mengikuti kemana Yesus pergi. Mirip dengan agama lainya Kristen tumbuh dengan cara yang sederhana: mengajak orang berbuat baik, melibatkan semua orang untuk bersyukur dan meneguhkan persaudaraan.
Tapi Romawi gemetar saat keyakinan ini dipeluk oleh ratusan orang. Caligula sang kaisar baru sangat brutal. Ia melakukan hukuman pada siapa saja yang menyebut diri murid Yesus. Persis di muka tahtanya Marcellus dan istrinya Diana memeluk kristen. Diana yang digambarkan rupawan memikat hati Caligula. Bangsawan Romawi-Marcellus dan Diana- yang dikenal rasional itu kemudian memeluk kristen. Keyakinan yang taruhanya hukuman mati.
Rajutan kisah yang tebal ini kaya akan suasana: perburuan, kesangsian dan diskusi tentang mukjizat. Dirajut pada sebuah cerita emosional yang meyentuh dan tak terduga. Saya sebagai muslim seperti mendapat kisah yang serupa: ketika Islam tumbuh dengan kecaman dan ancaman. Keyakinan atas kebenaran itu memang selalu meyentuh rakyat kecil lebih dulu kemudian para pemuda serta anak-anak. Hingga bertahanya keyakinan itu bukan karena mukjizat tapi Iman yang dipercaya akan ubah keadaan.
Novel ini berada pada latar Romawi yang feodal dan kapitalistik. Penguasanya rakus hingga mudah dibeli oleh para saudagar. Bahkan Iman Yahudi tumbuh dengan cara congkak: ingin benar sendiri dan memusuhi Kristen yang saat itu dianggap pesaing. Sungguh kondisi yang masih berlaku hingga saat ini. Keyakinan atas kebenaran yang dicederai oleh penguasa dan mereka yang juga merasa punya Iman. Sajian cerita yang membuat saya tiba-tiba jadi merasa penting untuk tetap beriman!
