Tampak sebagai pecinta keluarga dan disayangi oleh teman-temannya. Memimpin perusahaan pers yang harus mempertimbangkan aspek idealis dan bisnis. Kay seperti menaiki perahu yang airnya sedang bergolak. Ia tak hanya ragu tapi juga takut. Di adegan awal Kay dilatih untuk pidato dengan ditemani oleh penasehatnya.
Kala itu Amerika dipimpin oleh Presiden Nixon. Sosok yang kerap diejek di film ini sebagai: keras, intoleran dan arogan. Pada suasana semacam itu terbitlah dokumen ‘Pentagon Papers’ yang memuat keterlibatan Amerika dalam perang Vietnam. Dokumen ini membeberkan fakta menyakitkan kalau Amerika sebenarnya sudah tahu akan prospek kekalahanya. Tapi informasi ini sengaja ditutup dan bocor ketika sejumlah orang merasa perlu untuk menyiarkanya. Mula mula The New York Times yang mempublikasikan. Spontan reaksi keras muncul dari dalam Gedung Putih. The New York Times jadi tersangka pembocor dokumen. Tak mau tertinggal The Washington Post ingin mendapatkan bahan yang sama. Perburuan dimulai dan drama itu bergulir dari awal kisah kontroversial itu.
Tersebut Bradlee, pemimpin redaksi yang idealis, emosional dan keras. Ia punya minat yang tinggi pada berita apa saja. Baginya tak ada kata menyerah,takluk dan kalah dalam memburu berita. Ia juga tak mau dicampuri urusan redaksinya oleh siapapun. Termasuk pemiliknya Kay. Bayangan pria yang keras di tengah iklim berita politik yang panas. Bradlee memimpin dengan gaya otoriter sekaligus disiplin. Para jurnalisnya dituntut segera ke lapangan buru dokumen asli Pentagon Papers. Bahkan ia mendatangi Kay yang akrab dengan Menhan-Robert McNamara- saat itu. Berdua mereka dialog, diskusi dan bicara dalam keyakinan yang beda. Kay perempuan pemilik perusahaan yang ingin mengantarkan usaha dalam kebesaran bisnis dan Bradlee pemimpin redaksi yang meyakini kebebasan pers. Duet akting antara Tom Hanks (Bradlee) dan Meerly Streep (Kay) yang buat kita sulit berkedip.
Film ini menuturkan dengan indah batas antara kebenaran dan persahabatan. Pada saat mana bersahabat tak harus mengorbankan kebenaran yang memang harus diungkapkan. Juga kebenaran tak boleh kemudian menjadi racun dalam persahabatan. Itulah yang terjadi antara menteri pertahanan yang bersahabat karib dengan Kay, perempuan pemilik media. Juga ketika idealisme ditantang oleh pertimbangan pragmatis. Bradlee yang nekat, meyakini kebebasan pers musti beradu argumen dengan dewan direksi media. Dewan yang selalu punya pertimbangan laba dan mempertahankan keyakinan bahwa media adalah usaha bisnis. Disana ada pertimbangan resiko dan untung. Suara idealisme musti sejajar dengan keinginan para investor. Lagi-lagi Kay mengambil keputusan yang berbeda.
Tontonlah film ini untuk meyakini kebenaran itu tak bisa selamanya dikubur. Hidangan di film ini bukan hanya memuaskan kita untuk memahami keputusan benar itu pasti beresiko melainkan juga berteman itu tak selamanya berada pada jalan yang sejajar. Saya lama tertegun ketika Kay mengenang masa lampaunya: saat sang suami yang brilian meninggalkanya atau saat ia mengenang pidato yang memuat keyakinanya. Begitu pula Bradlee yang keras, penuh keyakinan tapi juga harus banyak pertimbangan. Istrinya membuat ia sadar betapa heroiknya Kay. Seperti diajak untuk merenung film ini memperlihatkan pada kita para pejuang kebenaran yang rapuh tapi tetap teguh walau kekuasaan yang dihadapi teramat besar. Singkatnya film ini menyuruh kita untuk meyakini kalau kebenaran itu pantas untuk diraih. Meski untuk mencapai itu semua kita harus luka, berdebat dan mungkin tak lagi bisa bersama.
Kala pulang dari nonton film ini saya seperti diajak untuk berkaca. Pada kekuasaan yang ujudnya tak berubah. Ingin menutupi diri dari kritik dan maunya menghukum yang tak taat. Hanya film ini meniupkan api optimis: perjuangan untuk mengungkap kebenaran memang harus didasarkan pada tim yang solid, bisa dipercaya dan dapat memerankan diri sebagai pejuang yang optimis dan nekat. Sesungguhnya film ini mau memuja kemandirian media, yang bukan melayani penguasa, melainkan menjadi suara utuh dari rakyat pembaca. Media memang bukan rombongan nabi yang dapat mukjizat, tapi media bisa jadi suluh yang menggerakkan kebenaran dengan menyingkap segala bentuk kebohongan.
